Piraeus was once the port serving Athens and a separate polis; now it's part of the huge Athens conurbation. We didn't bother with downtown Athens - Piraeus was new to us and that was enough. I took a random bus about 10 stops into the hinterland and then walked back. Piraeus is working town; even in the port cruise ships are incidental to the daily grind. Greeks live in apartments, individual houses are scarce, and there isn't room for market halls; markets set up in the streets, close to their customers. Train and tram stations just appear. There is no shortage of churches or parishioners.

It was a longer walk than I had planned for.
